BELGRADE – Dusan Ivkovic, coach of the Yugoslavia basketball team that won a World Cup, four Europeans and won Olympic silver in Seoul 1988, died this Thursday at the age of 78, the Serbian Federation reported..
Ivkovic, born in Belgrade in 1943, was one of the great European coaches and the most successful coach with the selection of the now defunct Yugoslavia, with which he won the 1990 World Cup in Argentina, achieved three gold medals at the Europeans (1989, 1991 and 1995), and silver at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
Between 2018 and 2013 he also directed the Serbian national team, with which he won silver in the 2009 European Championship.
He also coached clubs such as Partizan, Radnicki, Vojvodina, Greeks PAOK, Panionis and Olympiacos, Russia’s CSKA and Turkey’s Anadolu Efes, before retiring in 2016.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said in a message of condolences that Ivkovic “has marked an entire era of basketball with his knowledge and love for the sport.”
