Cristiano Ronaldo becomes top scorer in national history with 111 goals

By scoring the tying goal for Portugal in the 89th minute and then the victorious goal after six minutes of stoppage of play against Ireland (2-1) in qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Cristiano Ronaldo became Wednesday the top scorer in national history with 111 goals to his name, in 180 caps. Cirstiano Ronaldo, 36, overtakes Iranian Ali Daei, who scored 109 goals in 149 appearances for his national team between 1992 and 2006.

Cristiano Ronaldo, five-time Ballon d’Or, could have already broken this record earlier in the meeting but the Portuguese striker, who has just left Juve for Manchester United, had missed the conversion of a penalty saved by the young Irish goalkeeper 19-year-old Gavin Bazunu in the 15th minute of play.

Cristiano Ronaldo also equaled Spaniard Sergio Ramos on Wednesday, with his 180 caps, record holder – for a European player – for the number of caps with his country.
