Mikolas (1-2) pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings, during which he allowed three hits, walked a pair and struck out three. He had not won since September 12, 2019.
He missed the entire previous season with a right shoulder injury. This season, he was absent for a considerable time due to a stiff forearm problem.
The Cardinals hurt Vince Velasquez from the first inning, who opened the game on the spur of the moment. Velasquez (3-7) signed with San Diego on Friday after the Padres placed Blake Snell on the disabled list for a strained left groin.
