Carlos Alcaraz wins for the history books against Stefanos Tsitsipas

A young Spaniard has thrown one of the top favorites at the US Open from the tournament. 18-year-old Carlos Alcaraz won against the stunned Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Carlos Alcaraz fell on his back overwhelmed – and a jubilant cane swept through the Arthur Ashe Stadium: The 18-year-old Spaniard knocked out the Greek star player Stefanos Tsitsipas at the US Open with a sensational appearance and made history.

With the 6: 3, 4: 6, 7: 6 (7: 2), 0: 6, 7: 6 (7: 5) success against the world number three, the top talent reached as the youngest player since Michael Chang and Pete Sampras in 1989, then 17 and 18 years old, the round of 16 in New York. “I wouldn’t have made it without the audience,” said Alcaraz, who will now face Munich qualifier Peter Gojowczyk: “It was the best match of my career.”

It’s still young, but the prospects are extremely promising. “To be honest, I’ve never seen anyone hit the balls so hard and play such a good fifth set,” said Tsitsipas: “He can be a contender for a Grand Slam title, he has the game for it.”

Alcaraz had already moved into the third round at the French Open and then failed because of the German number two Jan-Lennard Struff. At least since his crazy performance on Friday evening, the world number 55 is. from the Murcia region is now on everyone’s lips.

Osaka also eliminated

Leylah Fernandez caused another sensation. She won against the Japanese Naomi Osaka with 7: 5, 6: 7 (2: 7) and 4: 6. Osaka was the clear favorite in the duel with number 73 in the world rankings and also a contender for the tournament win in the last Grand Slam of the year. Fernandez, however, took away this hope and now meets Angelique Kerber from Kiel in the round of 16.

At the end of the second set Osaka got out of rhythm and made one careless mistake after another in the tie-breaker. After all, she was behind with a break in the third set and was so frustrated that she threw her club several times on the hard court and crept over the course in Flushing Meadows with her head bowed. Fernandez, on the other hand, repeatedly tore the audience out of their seats with her nerve-racking appearance on the center court and was able to transform a match point after a little more than two hours.
