Billy Beane and Bob Melvin could come and straighten out the Mets’ boat

When Steve Cohen bought the Mets, the organization hoped to regain its glory following the many escapades under the administration of the Wilpon family. The deal to get his hands on Francisco Lindor was a good first step in a season that was meant to be a step in the right direction in New York.

The problem is, it hasn’t been that easy.

The hires of Mickey Callaway, Jared Porter and Zack Scott all turned out to be catastrophic in the end, all of whom left (or suspended) over scandals. The team don’t perform on the pitch, and when they do, they go after their fans.

Another calm year in the Big Apple, what.

We feel that the organization needs seriousness. The name of Theo Epstein was raised in an attempt to bring some credibility, but now Ken Rosenthal comes up with a rather interesting idea: to bring Billy Beane and Bob Melvin to New York.

The Mets have experienced a lot of instability at the executive level and in the managerial position in recent years. In fact, no less than three general managers have been at the helm of the Mets since November 2020 (!) And four managers (including Carlos Beltran, who has never led a game) have been in office since 2017.

By bringing a respected duo like Beane and Melvin to town, the Mets would make sure to hire guys who have a proven track record and who could right the ship, which has been taking its noses for quite a while.

But why would Beane want to leave Oakland to come to New York? In fact, you have to go back to the 1980s to find the answer. Beane was a first-round pick for the Mets in 1980, but after a disappointing few years in the Majors, he became a scout for the A’s.

Who was he hired by? You know it: Sandy Alderson.

The latter, who will leave his post of president of baseball operations at the end of the season, could therefore bring his former protégé back under his tutelage. Beane would have financial means which would be higher under Steve Cohen, and by far.

Melvin doesn’t have a very deep connection to New York other than a few stints with the Yankees and Mets as a player, but just like Beane, he could leave the insecurity of Oakland to straighten out the Mets’ boat.

By letting Beane and Melvin leave, the A’s would save colossal sums of money at the same time. Now, would Beane be interested in going over the day-to-day operations that come with being the CEO of a team? Hard to say.

But he’s definitely on the Mets’ radar.

But even if Beane is a strong candidate to come to New York, he won’t be the only one. If Steve Cohen likes Theo Epstein better and the latter is interested in returning to service for a team that, let’s face it, needs a little office magic, Epstein will be the go-to candidate.

Still, you really have to watch out for the possibility of seeing Billy Beane and Bob Melvin at the Mets. The latter would have the chance to bring two respected figures to bring back some credibility to the organization, which it sorely needs.

It remains only to see if the two candidates will be interested, them.

  • Chris Sale is back and Tanner Houck is taking over.
  • It’s Marcus Semien’s birthday.
