It doesn’t really work for Lionel Messi at PSG for the time being. The Argentine superstar started in the starting line-up for the top match against Olympique Lyon, but was replaced by coach Mauricio Pochettino after 75 minutes to his own dismay. The substitutions of the latter ultimately paid off: in the absolute final phase, substitute Mauro Icardi made the winning goal. Final score: 2-1.
Messi had come very close to his first goal for PSG in the first half: the Argentinian rammed a free kick into the goal frame. In the second half, however, the Parisians fell behind after a goal by Lucas Paqueta. PSG only needed ten minutes – and a penalty from Neymar – to come alongside.
PSG didn’t seem to get any further than that. Coach Pochettino made a few changes in the slot, including Messi had to clear the field. The Argentinian couldn’t laugh at that, but in the end the trainer was right. Mauro Icardi, who was also thrown into the fray shortly after Messi’s substitution, took care of the winning 2-1 in the 92nd minute.
PSG remains in the lead in Ligue 1 thanks to Icardi’s late goal. The Parisians have started the competition with 18 out of 18. First pursuer Olympique Marseille has only 13 points, but has played one match less.
