Maverick Vinales has officially become a rider for Aprilia Racing Team Gresini. The salary received by the 26-year-old rider from Aprilia fell drastically compared to when he was in the Yamaha factory uniform.
Vinales’ move to Aprilia was quite a surprise to the Aprilia test rider, Andrea Dovizioso. One thing that is in the spotlight is the value of the contract.
“An extreme decision where he could lose a lot of money. He definitely believes in what he is doing, and considers this the right choice,” said Andrea Dovizioso as quoted by Italy24News, Wednesday (18/8/2021).
It seems that a high salary does not always make Maverick Vinales comfortable. The 26-year-old rider originally had a contract at the Tuning Fork until the end of the 2022 season, but he asked for his contract to be terminated sooner.
In the Gazzetta Della Sport report, Maverick Vinales had to be willing to lose 75 percent of the salary he received when he was in Yamaha uniform when he decided to move to Aprilia.
For example, in the 2021 MotoGP season, Top Gun received a fee of 8 million euros or around Rp. 135 billion. But next season, he receives a fee of around 2 million euros or the equivalent of Rp. 33.7 billion while in the uniform of the manufacturer based in Noale, Italy.
Vinales’ contract duration is one year for the 2022 season only, but there is an option for an extension for 2023 if both are equally happy with the results of the 2022 season.
The recruitment of Vinales is a strategic step from Aprilia in order to compete to the next level. As is known, starting the 2022 season, Aprilia will switch status to a full factory team, so they need good racers to be able to compete at the top.
Aprilia Racing CEO Massimo Rivola believes that Vinales is a good signing to accompany Aleix Espargaro in the paddock. Rivola also hopes that Vinales can have a positive impact on the Italian team.
“We are honored to be able to bring out all our best for Vinales. I am sure that, like Aleix, he will accept this very potential project. The arrival of Maverick in no way distances Lorenzo Savadori from the team, as he will remain an integral part of the Aprilia family. Racing,” said Rivola.
