Verona. In the end, the top favorite was a tad too strong. The German national team lost to the Netherlands 3: 7 in the final of the U-23 European Championship. Nevertheless, the positive prevailed after the tournament. “We are very satisfied with the development of the still very young team and look to the future with hope,” said Association President Jürgen Elsishans.
With a dramatic 1-0 success in the semifinals against hosts Italy, the team of national coach Steve Janssen made it into the final and thus secured the silver medal at the youth tournament for the second time in a row after 2019. With Alexander Schmidt and David Grimes, two players from the Guggenberg Legionnaires from Regensburg acted as supporting pillars in the team. In addition, with Lou Helmig, David Dinski and Marvin Kulinna, three former Regensburg citizens were in the squad. Germany finished the EM with victories against Ukraine (10: 0) and Belgium (10: 2) in the preliminary round as well as the sensational semi-final victory against Italy. Against the Netherlands, the selection of the German Baseball and Softball Association was already defeated in the group games by 1:10.
With the finals, the German team also qualified for the U-23 World Cup in 2022. At the end of September, the team will be competing in the U-23 World Cup, which should originally have taken place in 2020. In addition, the men’s European championship will take place in Turin from September 12th to 19th. The cadre nomination for this has not yet taken place.
