In the ERGO Open stage on Saturday, several games ended with an unpredictable result. For men Tunte / Točs, who, thanks to the ranking points of Olympian Edgars Točs, were sown with the second number, in the group fight for the first place with 1-2 (21:15, 19:21, 14:16) gave way to the seventh numbered Sandri Andrejevs and Toms Benjavam. Therefore, one of the contenders for medals had to play in the first round of the playoffs, in which Marcis Jirgenson and Arnis Reliņš lost with 0-2 (18:21, 22:24) (4th).
The main favorites of the tournament, Ardis Daniels Bedrītis and Artūrs Rinkevičs, reached the second round of the playoffs with two convincing victories. This was also the case for the third duo of the tournament Rinalds Aišpurs / Mihails Samoilovs and the pair sown with the 13th number Aleksandrs Solovejs / Ernests Puškundzis, who beat Relins and Jirgensons in the group, and then – the fifth number of the competition – Rūdolfs Stankevičs /.
The duo of young volleyball players who overcame the first round of play-offs should also be noted – Dāvis Teteris / Gustavs Auziņš and Olivers Bulgačs / Kristians Fokerots.
The game Bedrītis / Rinkevičs – Reliņš / Jirgensons is expected to be the most exciting fight in the quarterfinals on Sunday.
For women The biggest surprise in the group tournament on Saturday was taken care of by sweets Alise Bruzinska and Eva Rozīte-Nikitina. In the tournament with the seventh number, the players placed in the fight for victory in the group with 2-0 (21:13, 21:18) defeated one of the medal candidates – Kristīne Briedis and Luīze Skrastiņa, who were sown in the competition with the second number.
According to the ranking table, the victory was celebrated in the group and the elimination games from the second round – quarterfinals – will be started by Anna Rīta and Olympian Anastasia Kravčenoka (1st) and Varvara Brailko and Deniela Konstantinova (3rd). In another game for victory in the group “family fight” with the fifth number, the European ex-champion Inese Jursone paired with Liene Šimkusi with 2-0 (21:10, 21:13) defeated her daughter Krista Paegli, who plays together with Elisa Līva Kalniņš (4. ).
Kalniņa / Paegle and Briede / Skrastiņa also made it to the quarter-finals, after which Kravčenoka and Rīta were beaten in the quarter-finals after their failure in the group tournament.
In the final tournament of the Latvian championship in Liepaja, the medal is shared by 39 teams, including 16 women’s duets.
This season, in the ERGO Open Latvian Championship, beach volleyball teams compete in four stages and in the final stage. All five stages are held outside Riga, continuing to explore new regions of Latvia. This year, after a long break, the Latvian championship stage is again organized by Liepāja, where the final stage of the “ERGO Open” competition takes place – the Latvian champions in beach volleyball in 2021 will be crowned on August 22.
