The United States had not achieved gold in men’s individual golf since 1900

Xander Schauffele made history for American Olympic sport by winning the first gold medal in men’s individual golf in more than 100 years. In round one he registered after strokes under par, in the second eight under par, in the third three under par and in the final round, four strokes under par for a total of -18.

Schauffele was registered for the Olympic competition as the third highest ranked golfer according to the Official World Golf Ranking, behind Collin Morikawa and Justin Thomas.

It took more than 100 for golf to be contested in the Summer Olympics. This sport was part of the second and third edition of the summer joust. In the edition of Paris 1900, Charles Sands won first place and the British Walther Rutherford and David Robertson completed the podium. Four years later, in Saint Louis 1904George Lyon, of Canadian origin, won the gold medal and Americans Chandler Egan, silver, Burt McKinnie and Francis Newton, bronze, joined him in the medal table.

Return of golf in Rio 2016

The International Olympic Committee reinstated the event from the Olympic Games held in Rio de Janeiro during the summer of 2016 and the US returned to the podium. Sadly, it was third place from Matt Kuchar, as Briton Justin Rose won gold and Swede Henrik Stenson took silver.
