The two speeds of Oviedo handball

The Unión Financiera Base Oviedo stayed at the gates of promotion a few months ago, after a brilliant season, and yesterday began training in Vallobín with the same aspirations. To achieve this, the club chaired by Pepe Rionda has signed coach Ricardo Margareto, as well as players Elcio Carvalho, Federico Werbmter, Yailán Hechavarría, Rubén Rozada and Vladislav Parovinchak. The preseason players will also perform the homegrown players Dani Fernández, Hugo Rodríguez and Jaime González.

They continue from last season’s squad Cristian Murias, Juan Echevarría, Nacho Huerta, Rubén Menéndez, Nacho Zapico, Richi Díez, Dani Tolmos, David Ortega and Jayro Pérez. Meanwhile, Álvaro Campo, the team’s goalkeeper in the last two seasons, will go on to act as assistant coach and physical trainer. The team from Oviedo has friendly matches against Romo, Lalín, Teucro and Zarautz. In addition, they will participate in the Principality Cup, on September 4 and 5, against an opponent to be defined in the semifinals.

The Vetusta Handball already has a date and time for its historic debut in First National. It will be on Saturday, September 25, at 6:00 p.m., in front of Toscaf Atlética in the La Magdalena de Avilés pavilion. The club, which will celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2022, faces the challenge of competing in a category achieved in June with the same principles as always: quarry and modesty. The squad will be the same that achieved the promotion, with the only incorporation of Enrique Fernández Olmedo, a 21-year-old winger from Valladolid’s Delicias Handball, who moves to Oviedo for work reasons.

But the main novelty of Vetusta will be that of the coach, Rodri Llordén, who last season directed Soria Handball, with which he achieved promotion to the Silver Honor Division. The president of Vetusta Handball, Eduardo Valdés, pointed out that “we were looking for a young coach, but with experience in the category, and Rodri has it”.

Valdés assures that, to the extent of the club’s possibilities, they hope to incorporate two players, a defensive center-back and a front row, “with a more veteran profile than what we have in the squad, since they are all debutants in the category.” The board expects to exceed the 600 members of last season, although the restrictions due to the covid may initially leave the capacity of the Florida Arena at about 150 spectators, as in the promotion phase.
