Last weekend in Belgium, Jonas climbed the podium for the first time this season, winning third place in the stage.

“He also drove well and steadily to the Belgian stage, but the problem was in the start. Was on the train, only in the ninth car, this time jumped into the top three on both trips. The speed was the same before, but we saw in Lommel – Antonio Kairoli is the tenth in the start and not higher than the fifth and sixth place. The exception is Jeffrey Herling, who can fall and ascend to six, but there are not many such phenomena. Most riders are so similar that the start is very decisive, ”says Serģis to Latvijas Avīze.

This time the starts were successful, thanks to the changes made in the equipment, the rider himself felt the motorcycle well and demonstrated his mastery. Jonas was the leader for most of the second race, only overtaken by the Frenchman Roman Fever in the 11th lap.

“Paul was driving at his own pace. As soon as you try to drive faster, it’s a fall. Paul was one of the few who did not fall in Belgium. If he had tried to hold the leading position… Better a tit in his hand than a capercaillie in a tree, ”says Kristers Serģis.

“Maybe on the first race I should have received and kept Cairoli behind, but the experience of Cairoli, Fever – excellent riders, former world champions. If such jacks pass, you do not have to lower your head. Paul must learn, gain such experience, and then he will learn to react, to fight. At the moment, it was a great ride. ”

Kristers hopes that Paul will be able to keep a cool mind in Ķegums as well. If the start is successful, then the result must be good. The fierce competition is confirmed by the fact that the current world champion Slovenian Tim Gayser is also the leader this season, although he has not won any races in the last four stages. The first four athletes are awarded only 14 points in the overall rating.

Jonass will be the only representative of Latvia in the MXGP class, but several Latvians will compete in the European Championship – in the Open class Harijs Suharževskis, Kārlis Kalējs and Rainers Žuks will compete, and in the 250 cubic centimeter class – Mairis Pumpurs, Kristiāns Freimanis, Rūdolfs Aumeistars, Uldis Freibergs

Last year, three stages of the World Championship took place in Ķegums during the week. This year there is one, which does not mean that the organization is easier, because the restrictions of Covid-19 are stricter than a year ago, the main organizer Kristers Serģis admits.

The configuration of the track has remained the same as last year for the third stage. Viewers will be divided into two zones – one for vaccinated and Covid-19 patients, the other for people with a negative test.

The first zone will be able to have an unlimited number of fans, the second – up to a thousand.
