TeamNL to surpass Olympic record 2000, China remains undisputed leader | Sport

Swimmer Sharon van Rouwendaal, athlete Femke Bol and show jumping rider Maikel van der Vleuten (in combination with horse Beauville Z) gave TeamNL the 21st, 22nd and 23rd medal in the Japanese capital on Wednesday. And there are still two medals to be added.

Boxer Nouchka Fontijn is already certain of at least bronze in the category up to 75 kilograms and the hockey women are also assured of gold or silver thanks to their place in the final. The supreme track cyclists and Sifan Hassan, who is in top form, also still have good chances of winning a medal. Team NL has now won six gold, eight silver and nine bronze.

In Sydney, the Netherlands took 25 medals: twelve gold, nine silver and four bronze. In recent days, TeamNL has already surpassed the performances of London 2012 (twenty medals, six of which are gold) and Rio 2016 (nineteen medals, eight gold).

The Netherlands won 22 medals at the 2004 Athens Games. Of these, four were gold in color. The Orange took home both silver and bronze nine times in Athens.

China is still the undisputed leader in the medal tally, but only hailed one silver medal on Wednesday. That was the 70th place these Games: 32 gold, 22 silver and 16 bronze. The American team (25-31-23) remains second, but is still the leader (79) in the ranking of the total number of medals. Host nation Japan (7/21/12) is third, now followed by Great Britain (15-18-15), Australia (15-4-17) and Russia (14-21-18).
