Storer doubles the bet, Eiking takes the red jersey from Roglic

Australian Michael Storer won the 10th stage of the Tour of Spain on Tuesday, after which Norwegian Odd Christian Eiking took the red jersey from Primoz Roglic.

It was only after 60 km that a breakaway was formed comprising 32 riders, including Odd Christian Eiking (Intermarché) and Guillaume Martin (Cofidis), the best classified overall. But it was still the day of Michael Storer (DSM): the 24-year-old adventurer attacked in the ascent of Puerto de Almachar, the only difficulty of the day, to raise his arms alone. This is the second time in a few days, after the 7th stage at the end of last week. A little further on, the fight raged for the red jersey: Martin attacked in the last kilometer of Puerto de Almachar without however succeeding in releasing Eiking, who was ahead of him in the general classification before this stage.

The 26-year-old Norwegian even managed to outrun Martin in the descent, alongside the Belgian Mauri Vansevenant (Deceuninck) and the French Clément Champoussin (AG2R), very good since the start of this Vuelta. At the finish, Eiking is the new red jersey, taking advantage of the passivity of the peloton for most of the day, and Martin his runner-up (12th on the stage).

Risky attack from Roglic who fell

Behind, Roglic, for a time, hoped to keep his leader’s jersey, after leaving the peloton alone in the Puerto de Almachar. But if the Slovenian attack was a surprise for her, it was also risky and, on the descent, he fell, allowing his two main competitors from the Movistar, Enric Mas and Miguel Angel Lopez, to return, accompanied by Jack Haig (Bahrain). In the general classification, these four favorites are behind, in that order, Eiking and Martin.

The big losers of the day are to be found among the riders of Ineos-Grenadiers: neither Adam Yates, nor the Colombian winner of the last Giro, Egan Bernal, nor the Olympic champion Richard Carapaz managed to follow. They now seem doomed to play a secondary role in this Vuelta.
