During a badminton match, viewers mistake the names of two players for Pikachu and Raichu
The Tokyo 2020 Olympics are taking place these days, which recently created a very funny misunderstanding among Japanese viewers.
The event that created the misunderstanding was the badminton match between the United States and Japan. The US team was made up of brothers Phillip e Ryan Chew, but for the live broadcast their names have been shortened to make them enter the box dedicated to them. Of the names, only the initials were kept, while the surname was written in Katakana. Japanese viewers then saw the two names written like this: P. Chu (P. Chu) e R. Chu (R. Chu).
Many viewers have therefore mistakenly read their names as Pikachu e Raichu, the two first generation Mouse Pokémon (which ironically can also be brothers, since they are of the same evolutionary line).
Many have in fact reported this on Twitter, also apologizing for having swapped the athletes with the two Pokémon.
Surely it would have been nice to see the two Pokémon participate in the Olympics, perhaps more as opponents than allies, to remember the rivalry that is often seen between them. Unfortunately, Pokémon are not yet part of Olympic sports, and probably never will, unless the competitive Pokémon becomes an Olympic category.
Olympic elements, however, have always been represented in the Pokémon world, especially in the first series of the anime, where it also features an Olympic torch that was lit to start the Blue Plateau League tournament. In the same series there was also a village where the participants could reside, which in Japanese was called with the words with which an Olympic village is defined.
