Kipchoge confirmed his role as favorite
World record holder Eliud Kipchoge from Kenya masterfully defended his marathon victory at the Olympic Games. He won in Sapporo with a time of 2:08:38 and continued the five-year-old championship from Rio de Janeiro. Two Somali natives representing European countries ran behind the 36-year-old favorite with a loss of almost one and a half minutes. Abdi Nageeye won silver for the Netherlands and Bashir Abdi won bronze in a Belgian jersey.
Kipchoge is the third marathoner to defend his Olympic victory. Before him, the legendary Ethiopian Abebe Bikil (1960 and 1964) and the representative of the former GDR Waldemar Cierpinski (1976 and 1980) succeeded.
