Bo Svensson becomes coach at Union Berlin

1. FC Union Berlin has hired Bo Svensson as their new coach. As the German Bundesliga club announced on Thursday, the 44-year-old Dane succeeds Nenad Bjelica, who was released shortly before the end of the season, and interim coach Marco Grote.

With Svensson – who was also said to have been in talks with Salzburg before the “Bulls” signed Pepijn Lijnders – the Köpenickers want to find their way back to their old strength in their sixth Bundesliga year.

It was only on Tuesday, three days after the team had managed to avoid relegation, that the “Iron Ones” presented Horst Heldt as their new managing director of professional football. Svensson takes over Union just one year after qualifying for the Champions League, when the club is in a bad spot. After a nerve-racking season with a series of defeats, two coaching changes and the team having managed to avoid relegation, the Berlin team is finally looking for consistency on the sidelines again.
