Lille equal a sad record

There was Sète, in 1933-1934. There is now the LOSC, version 2021-2022. Reigning French champions, Lille indeed equaled the record of the Sétois, who had won the first division in 1932-1933 and had also conceded 7 goals in two days. This is not, however, the “ultimate” record in the history of the D1: FC Sète had taken 9 goals at the end of the Second World War, in 1945-1946.

Lille, however, did not have the worst start to the season for a defending champion. In the 21st century, only Paris (2020-2021), Marseille (2010-2011) and Nantes (2001-2002) had started the defense of their title with fewer points after two matches than Lille this season. These three clubs had zero points, two defeats, after two days. They had respectively taken two (PSG), five (OM) and four (FCN) goals.

The recovery is often difficult for the reigning champion LOSC

Moreover, the fact of not winning any of his first two matches is far from unprecedented for a defending champion. Thus, this is the sixth time in the last 12 seasons that the outgoing winner of L1 has not won any of his first two Ligue 1 matches. In addition to the three clubs mentioned above, Montpellier only had one point in 2012-2013 , like Lille itself after its previous title (1 draw and 1 loss) in 2011-2012.

It is even a habit for the LOSC: the northern club has not won any of its first two meetings of a Ligue 1 season as defending champion for the third time in its history on 4 occasions, there having arrived only in 1954-1955.
