Karlie Loida, the two-time World Cup winner, has announced that he will end his football career at the end of the year.
The 39-year-old player has tried on the US national team shirt in 312 games and has represented 11 clubs in his 22-year career, spending 12 years as a professional. Lloyd is one of four players to play football for the national team shirt more than 300 times. She is about to end her career as a member of the US national team in the friendly matches in September and October.
She must also finish the season in the Gotham Club of the National Women’s Football League.
The New Jersey-born footballer hinted at the end of his football career after the United States defeated Canada in the semi-finals of the Tokyo Olympics earlier this month and confirmed his decision on Monday. “When I first started for the national team in 2005, I had two main goals – to be as good a footballer as I could be and to help the team win the championships,” she said in a statement. “Every day when I went out on the pitch, I played as if it were my last game. I never wanted to take anything for granted, especially knowing how hard it is to get to the top, but it’s even harder to stay there for so long, ”she explains her career.
During three decades, Lloyd played for the US national team under five different head coaches, traveling above the World Cup in 2015 and 2019, and finishing second in 2011. In the 312 national team games, which also include participation in the four Olympic Games, the US team has 257 wins, 17 draws and 38 losses with a victory rate of 88 percent.
She thanked for the opportunity to represent the country in the US national team for the last 17 years. Lloyd is one of two Americans to win the FIFA Player of the Year award more than once in 2015 and 2016. The other is Mija Hema, who did it in 2001 and 2002. In 312 games, the attacking type of the US national team, who can play as both midfielder and forward, has scored 128 goals.
