Champions League: Stöger-Club loses outnumbered in the play-off

Champions League

Peter Stöger is lagging behind as a coach in the race for his first participation in the UEFA Champions League. The Viennese had to admit defeat to Hungary’s champions Ferencvaros Budapest on Wednesday in the play-off first leg at Young Boys Bern, despite a long numerical superiority with 2: 3 (1: 2).

Ferencvaros missed the chance of a better starting position in Bern. The Hungarians, already represented in the premier class last year, took the lead through Franck Boli (14th) after a gross mistake by Mohamed Camara. Meschack Elia managed to equalize with a deflected shot from distance (16th).

Young Boys defender Silvan Hefti saw a red card for a textile foul in the penalty area (25th). Myrto Uzuni took the following penalty kick. Aissa Laidouni scored in the pursuit, but the Tunisian ran into the penalty area too early. The goal didn’t count after the VAR decision – much to Stöger’s annoyance. “The game would certainly have gone differently if we had taken the lead with the penalty,” said the 55-year-old after the match.

Bern scores two goals outnumbered

His team did not use the numerical superiority for the time being, instead the Bernese struck through a dream goal by Vincent Sierro (40th) and after a solo effort by Ulisses Garcia, whom Stöger’s protégés had only given escort (65th). The Ivor Boli at least managed to hit the next goal (82nd).

“If you play eleven against ten, there could be more in there, but with the result we still have every chance for the second leg,” said Stöger. “Everything was in there that a football game should have. The game can go in both directions. ”It is bitter that they only allowed a few scoring chances, but conceded three goals from long-range shots from outside the penalty area. “We didn’t use our big points like that.”

Mwene is defeated with Eindhoven in Lisbon

A 1: 2 defeat set it for ÖFB legionnaire Phillipp Mwene with PSV Eindhoven at Benfica Lisbon. Mwene started on the right defensive side next to the ex-Salzburg Andre Ramalho. The goals were scored by the home side through Rafa Silva (10th) and Julian Weigl (42nd) before the break. To the delight of coach Roger Schmidt, Eindhoven shifted up a gear after changing sides and was rewarded with a goal after a solo by Cody Gakpo (51st). Mwene, who switched from FSV Mainz to PSV before the season, was in action for the full 90 minutes.

The door to the Malmö FF group stage has already opened wide. The earlier Salzburg fright defeated the Bulgarian champions Ludogorez Razgrad at home 2-0 (1-0). For the Swedes it would be the third CL participation after 2014 and 2015. At that time they had eliminated Austria’s champions from Salzburg in qualifying as outsiders. The return legs for a place in the premier class will follow on Tuesday.
