Reigning champion Laura Kenny’s hopes of winning a third consecutive Olympic gold medal at omnium took an early blow when she was involved in a big accident in the opening scratch race at the Izu Velodrome this Sunday.

The British cyclist, a winner in 2012 and 2016 and in search of her sixth Olympic track cycling gold in total, found herself engulfed in the spectacular mound near the end of the 30-lap race, the first of the four gold-deciding events.

At least nine cyclists were involved in the mayhem with bikes and bodies flying in all directions.

Kenny was one of the four runners who could not finish the race, won by American Jennifer Valente, who took 40 points. The promise of medal for Poland, Daria Pikulik, could not finish either.

Kenny could be seen riding his bike after the race with no apparent signs of serious injury or damage, and will now have to try to get back into the fight in the time, elimination and points races. All those involved in the accident received 16 points.
