Breakthrough at home – sport

Nils Politt is driving what is probably the best season of his career so far: In July, the Cologne-based driver secured his first stage win in the Tour de France, and now he has won the first tour of his career on the Tour of Germany. And with the classic Paris-Roubaix, another race with good chances of victory is just around the corner at the beginning of October. The 27-year-old professional from the Bora-Hansgrohe team raved about winning the new tour through his homeland: “Winning a tour is great, but when it happens in Germany, it is all the better.”

At the end of the “difficult race” Politt was only four seconds ahead of overall runner-up and team mate Pascal Ackermann, but he had worked hard with a solo victory on the third stage and the finale on Sunday: “So how Nils competed in bike races today, he deservedly won, “said top sprinter Ackermann after the four-day tour.

“We have really big tasks for him,” says his team boss

Politt’s success is no coincidence. Since moving to the team from Raubling this year, the classic specialist has once again developed. At Bora-Hansgrohe, Politt has even more opportunities to pursue his own ambitions – as is the case with the Germany tour, which, with its wavy profile, matched his strengths. “He should take on more responsibility. We have really big tasks for him,” said his team boss Ralph Denk back in July: “We saw that if he is in a good mood, he can also win.”

Nonetheless, the highlight of the season is still to come. On October 3rd, after around two and a half years, the Paris-Roubaix cobblestone classic is to take place again. Already after his stage victory in the Tour of France in the summer, Politt spoke of Roubaix as the next “big goal”. In view of his previous achievements, he should start as captain of his team and will undoubtedly be one of the winning candidates.

Incidentally, in the last edition for the time being, the Cologne-based racer failed only shortly before the end in the sprint against the former Belgian world champion Philippe Gilbert. Politt would certainly like to avoid a similar scenario this time.
