Tokyo Olympics: struck down by Zverev, Djokovic deprived of Olympic gold and “Golden Slam”

There will be no Golden Slam this year for Novak Djokovic! Big surprise in Tokyo, where the world number one was released by Alexander Zverev in three sets: 1-6, 6-3, 6-1. Huge favorite of the tournament, the Serbian had so far largely dominated his opponents, like Kei Nishikori, swept 6-2, 6-0 in the quarter-finals.

After his victories at the Australian Open, at Roland Garros and then at Wimbledon this season, Djokovic aspired to complete his Olympic Gold record and thus hoped to be in the running for an impressive “Golden Slam”, namely the victory in the four Grand Slam tournaments, and the Olympics. He will have to be satisfied, at best, with the bronze medal.

Great emotion for Alexander Zverev. At 24, and for his first Olympic Games, the German is assured of a medal. He will play for gold against Russia’s Karen Khachanov, who defeated Pablo Carreno Busta earlier today.
