He often repeats that he would not have survived if he had been a player in the social media era, and that is understandable. Boxing fights, confusions, controversies: Charles Barkley did almost everything during his illustrious career – even make a man go through the window and have no regrets in front of the judge.
But if the law has never frightened him, a member of the staff of the Dream Team 1992 reduced him to the most total fear … At the microphone of “The Steam Room”, the Chuckster told the brilliant anecdote involving him, Mike Krzyzewski… and Coach K’s daughter:
I have never been so scared in my life. We were with the Dream Team, and one of a coach’s daughters asks me, “Charles, can I get some beers from your mini-bar?” Scottie, Michael, Magic and I played cards every night downstairs. I answer him: “Of course”, and I give him my key. When I come back to my room 5 hours later, the mini bar is empty.
I arrived at practice the next day, there was Coach K on one side of the floor, and me on the other side. He walks to my side, I walk around and I go in my turn in front. I didn’t want to be close to him, I was terrified!
At the end of the session, the moment of truth finally arrived and Krzyzewski asked Barkley if he could talk to him for a while. Sir Charles told the story and apologized, but Coach K was not upset and added:
“No problem, it wasn’t your fault. It’s her fault ”.
Charles Barkley let loose the biggest sigh of relief of his life that day, “exonerated” by Coach K of the overly watered evening of his offspring. One more anecdote in the pantheon of the Barcelona Dream Team!
