After two rounds, there are only four top ten players left in the women’s Olympic tournament.
After the world number one Ashleigh Barty, Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka (WTA 3) and Polish Iga Swiatek (WTA 8) also failed. The top favorite Naomi Osaka, Jelina Switolina and Wimbledon finalist Karolina Pliskova are all in the lower half of the tableau, in that of Belinda Bencic only number 9 Garbiñe Muguruza, a possible semi-final opponent, is left.
Sabalenka lost in the tiebreak of the third set against the Croatian Donna Vekic, Swiatek failed in two sets against the Spaniard Paula Badosa.
