On July 23, the Japanese city of Tokyo will host the 32nd Olympiad of the modern era, initially scheduled for 2020 and postponed to 2021 due to the health crisis. Among the French delegation, 35 licensed athletes in the territory will represent the Occitanie Region at the Olympic Games, from 8 departments: Aude (1), Aveyron (1), Gard (5), Haute-Garonne (10), Hérault (14) , Hautes-Pyrénées (1), Pyrénées-Orientales (2) and Tarn (1). Seven Paralympic athletes from the territory are also already selected for the Paralympic Games which will start on August 24.

« A few days before the start of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo, I would like to extend to the entire French delegation and more particularly to the licensed athletes in Occitanie all our encouragement and wishes for success. I would also like to salute the commitment, passion and self-sacrifice they show after an unprecedented preparation in the context of a global pandemic. The Occitanie Region is already proud of them and will thrill in front of their performances! »Declared the president of the Occitanie Region Carole Delga.

The Occitanie Region is pursuing a proactive and ambitious sports policy with a budget of € 29 million devoted to sport in 2021. The Region supports the journey of high-level athletes throughout their careers through individualized aids, which make it possible to support these athletes in their personal journey towards sporting excellence and to alleviate the financial constraints weighing on them and their families.

The Region is also investing heavily to modernize and adapt the sports facilities in its territory and in particular the two Sports Resource, Expertise and Performance Centers (CREPS) of which it owns, located on 3 sites: Toulouse, Montpellier and Font-Romeu Since 2016, the Region has thus mobilized € 77.2 million in favor of its CREPS.

This sports policy is bearing fruit: beyond the many licensed athletes in the territory that regularly shines in international competitions and in particular during the last Olympic and Paralympic competitions, Occitanie is also recognized worldwide for the reception and preparation of these great sporting events. Since June, 11 international delegations and 3 French teams (athletics, swimming and modern pentathlon) have thus finalized their preparation for the Games at the CNEA in Font-Romeu, in order to train in the heat and conditions of humidity that they will encounter in Tokyo.

Many French and international athletes selected for the Tokyo Olympic Games have also lived in Occitania, completed their training and / or preparation in regional structures, representing a total of nearly 130 French and international athletes.
