The Dutch men had started the tournament moderately. After a loss against Belgium, the formation of national coach Max Caldas against ‘hockey midget’ South Africa barely prevented a failure. A lightning fast 0-3 deficit was turned into a 5-3 victory. The men were also unable to convince in the third group match against Canada, although a 4-2 victory was booked.
After eight minutes of hockey, the Orange squad got the first penalty corner, but just like all twelve times before this tournament, Caldas’ team was unable to score from this. In the second quarter, the Netherlands took the lead via Thierry Brinkman via a very nice goal. Especially the action that preceded the goal should be there.
From the thirteenth penalty corner for the Orange this tournament, it was finally hit. Jip Janssen took advantage of the opportunity and doubled the score for the Netherlands. Still, the tension came back in the last quarter when Great Britain made the connecting goal via Samuel Ian Ward and were also very close to the equalizer not much later. The 2-2 was in the air and four minutes before time the British actually came alongside.
