Herringbone finishes in the big group in the “Tour de France” stage; two days after the team shake, Mohorič wins The news

Liburna (France), July 16, LETA – AFP. On Friday, Latvian cyclist Toms Skujiņš took 121st place in the 19th stage of the prestigious multi-day cycling tour “Tour de Freance”, celebrating the victory two days ago to the Slovenian athlete Matejs Mohoričs of the Bahrain Victorious team, who was shaken by the police.

On Friday, cyclists covered 207 kilometers with one fourth-category climb after 12 kilometers.

From the very beginning of the competition, there were several attempts at rebounds. In one of them, after driving eight kilometers away from the group, Skujiņš and Pis Mihals Kvjatkovskis (“Ineos Grenadiers”) tried to leave. Both were rushed to the leader of the overall ranking Tadej Pogačar (UAE), who started to get scared to Skujiņa and Kvjatkovski, the Slovenian apparently believed that the athletes who had experienced a fall before had to wait.

After that, another outburst occurred without Skujiņš, although 50 kilometers later the Latvian tried to leave the concrete again, but without success.

About 100 kilometers before the finish, a large group of 20 cyclists formed, in which the competition for prizes took place on Friday. About 25 kilometers before the finish, Mohorič went on a solo break and reached the finish alone after four hours 19 minutes and 17 seconds in the distance. 58 seconds later, the Frenchman Christoph Laport (“Cofidis, Solutions Credits”) and the Danish Kaspers Pedersen (DSM) finished.

The big group lost 20 minutes and 50 seconds to the winner. It was led by the UAE team with Pogačars, and at the same time his closest followers and Skujiņš finished.

Mohorič also won the seventh stage of this tour. His second success comes after a search of French Bahrain Victorious’s rooms by French police on Wednesday. The team is reported to have been investigated last year on suspicion of participating in a doping scheme. The team itself denies breaking the rules and has not yet been charged.

There will be an individual trip on Saturday, but on Sunday the tour will end with a group trip. Pogačars is almost unbearable in the overall standings, and only a great failure can prevent him from defending the title.

Closest follower Jonas Vingegārds from Denmark (“Jumbo Visma”) is five minutes and 45 seconds behind, but Ecuadorian Richard Karapass (“Ineos Grenadiers”) is six more behind. Herring with a deficit of almost three hours is in position 72.

The Tour de France will end on Sunday with a finish at the Champs Elysées. Six days after the final stage of the “Tour de France”, the Tokyo Olympic Games will start cycling, so the multi-day trip has been postponed to a slightly earlier time this year.

The Tour de France is taking place for the 108th time. The 21-stage race will only take place on French roads this year, although the start was originally planned in Copenhagen. Seven of the stages are more convenient for sprinters.

For the fourth year in a row, Skujiņš will start in the “Tour de France” ranks of the “Trek-Segafredo” team, who in the first half of June was crowned Latvian champion in the group and also in the individual race.
