In Ohio, a large sinkhole caused by a broken drain pipe opened and swallowed part of a baseball field.
On Thursday morning, the sinkhole formed on McDonald Commons in the city of Madeira, Ohio, according to City Council member Brian Mueller’s Facebook post, the drain pipe failed amid severe flooding.
“Heavy rain overnight caused flooding across the city, including the central business district. Unfortunately, a drain pipe failed at McDonald Commons, causing a 20 ′ x 40 ′ sinkhole near baseball field B, ”Mueller said in the post.
Der Cincinnati Enquirerreported the area rained more than 3 inches within 24 hours between Wednesday and Thursday.
Mueller shared a photo of the sinkhole on his Facebook page, showing that much of the baseball field had been damaged while a fence was being erected to keep people out.
He said that as the area worsens, the city expects the hole to be hit by rain, initially writing that officials “have not yet determined” how the sinkhole would affect the Independence Day fireworks event, which is Held on July 3rd on the Common.
In a later post, however, Mueller acknowledged that the annual event would take place and wrote, “The good news is that the #Madeira Independence Day celebrations and the fireworks at McDonald Commons are still ON!”
In a statement to the demandMueller added that while the hole was “unlikely” to be repaired in time for Saturday’s event, he said that “the city is assessing the safety of the cordon off the area for attendees” “when he confirmed, that they have already blocked the dirty baseball fields to prevent dust from being blown up while walking / ruining. “
Sinkholes, found all over the world, can form gradually or appear very suddenly, making them extremely dangerous.
In June, two dogs were rescued from a giant sinkhole they ran into on a farm in Mexico after it grew in size and devoured a nearby house.
The sinkhole in the state of Puebla, which was the size of an American football field, formed on a farm in the city of Juan C. Bonilla in late May.
One house was swallowed, so the family that owned it were evacuated while two dogs fell into the hole and were trapped on a ledge in the crater for four days.
The dogs were finally rescued after the rescue workers initially prevented them from being brought to safety due to the dangerous conditions at the sinkhole.
