Golf: a spectator steals a club from Rory McIlroy before his eyes in the middle of a tournament

This is called having nerve. Golfer Rory McIlroy had a funny mishap during the second round of the Scottish Open on Friday, when a fan stole one of his clubs to perform a few practice swings.

The man took advantage of a chat between McIlroy, le champion de l’US Open Jon Rahm and the American Justin Thomas at the tee of the 10th hole to try out one of the Briton’s clubs.

On videos posted on social networks, we see this spectator approaching the golfer’s bag, then grabbing one of his clubs, before trying out a few movements, under the dumbfounded gaze of the former world number one .

The man was eventually escorted by a security guard after handing the club over to McIlroy’s caddy Harry Diamond. “He was standing at the back of the tee and went over to Rory’s bag, took the driver and did a few swings with it,” a spectator described to The Scotsman.

David Wilson, a member of the nearby Kilspindie club who posted the footage, adds: “He was taken care of quickly. The players laughed at it, saying they knew he wasn’t a golfer when they saw his catch ”.

The Scottish Open is the first tournament since the easing of restrictions on Covid-19 allowed spectators to attend a sporting event in the country.
