It is now clear to everyone that the British have not digested the blue triumph at Euro 2020. The news is that now the losers have decided to spite our country by “boycotting” Made in Italy. Based on Istat data, as reported by the Day, UK citizens’ pasta purchases plummeted by 25% in 2021. A collapse due not only to the Wembley effect but also to Brexit and the related bureaucratic and administrative difficulties, in particular customs procedures and the increase in transport costs.
In the UK there are also other Italian excellences, such as wine, tomato derivatives, cheeses (Grana Padano and Parmigiano Reggiano in particular), salami and olive oil. A crisis that jeopardizes the 3.4 billion annual exports across the Channel. The European effect, however, is not limited to the agri-food sector. Suffice it to say that in the two days following the final lost by England, there was a boom in cancellations received from hotels in Rome: around 40% of the total number of British tourists.
To weigh on the cancellations, however, it would not only be the resentment for the lost game but also the five-day quarantine obligation imposed by Minister Roberto Speranza to try to stem the Delta variant, very common in the United Kingdom. An attitude, that of Italy’s opponents, which confirms a lack of sportsmanship, also demonstrated by the whistles of the Mameli anthem and the medals immediately removed from the neck.
