The 14 teams that failed to make the playoffs last season will be entered into the NBA Draft Lottery drawing, with the worst-scoring teams from the regular season all having an equal chance of winning the Draft Lottery.

In practice, that means the Houston Rockets, Detroit Pistons, and Orlando Magic all have a 14 percent chance of landing the first overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft.

Before the 2019 NBA streamlined the process, the team with the worst preseason record had a 25 percent chance of winning the draft lottery, while the teams with the second and third worst records had a 19.9 percent chance, respectively. 15.6 percent had.

Before 2019, the team with the worst record was guaranteed not to be lower than the fourth, while it now receives a tip that is no worse than a total of five.

Fourteen ping pong balls number 1 through 14 are placed in a lottery machine before being mixed for 20 seconds.

As prodie NBA: “There are 1001 possible combinations when four of 14 balls are drawn, regardless of the order in which they are selected. Before the lottery, 1,000 of these 1,001 combinations are allocated to the 14 participating lottery teams.”

After the 20-second mix, the first ball is removed while the remaining 13 balls are used for another 10. seconds before a second ball is drawn.

After another 10-second mix, a third ball is drawn. The remaining 11 balls are shuffled again for 10 seconds before a fourth ball assigned to that combination is drawn, receiving overall tip # 1 before repeating the process for tips two through four.

After the first four picks are confirmed, the remaining 10 lottery teams vote in reverse order from their regular season record.
