The Uruguayan team defeated Paraguay 1-0 in Rio de Janeiro and qualified for the quarterfinals as second in group A of the Copa América, which is played in Brazil.
The team led by Óscar Wáshington Tabárez finished with seven points and will now be Colombia’s rival in the next phase of the tournament. The game will be this Saturday, starting at 5 in the afternoon, at the Goiania Olympic Stadium.
Édinson Cavani scored the only goal of the match, 21 minutes into the first half, from a penalty.
Colombia and Uruguay will meet again in the Copa América after almost 17 years. The most recent duel was on July 24, 2004, in Cusco (Peru), in a duel for third place in the tournament. The celestial won 2-1.
“The victory brings us more confidence to continue growing as a group,” said Rodrigo Bentancur during the press conference. Regarding the duel against Colombia, he assured that the ‘tricolor’ has a great team, but “we will seek classification.”
During the closing of the game, Paraguay pressed the game in search of a draw but did not get it. At the end there was a controversial play, after a foul made by José María Giménez on the outskirts of the area, according to the interpretation of the judge.
The VAR corroborated the play because it could mean a penalty, but ratified the referee’s decision.
