UEFA tweets brightly – Hungary countered with national colors

NAfter the discussion about rainbow lighting in the Munich arena, several Hungarian clubs want to illuminate their stadiums in their national colors during the European Championship match between Hungary and Germany on Wednesday (9 p.m. / in the FAZ live ticker for the European Football Championship, ZDF and MagentaTV). Gabor Kubatov, President of Hungary’s largest club, Ferencvaros, called on the clubs to take part in this campaign on Facebook. “Let’s color all the stages red-white-green! Home above all! ”Wrote Kubatov, who is also the vice-president of Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s ruling Fidesz party.

According to Kubatov, the initiative goes back to an ultra group of Ferencvaros who complained about the “provocative news” in the context of the rainbow lighting in Munich. So far, MTK Budapest and DVSC from Debrecen have joined the campaign, whose management is also in contact with Fidesz politicians.

Meanwhile, the European Football Union (UEFA) has defended its decision against the rainbow lighting at the Munich EM arena. “Some” had interpreted this “as political”, the umbrella organization announced on Wednesday. “On the contrary, the request itself was political and connected with the presence of the Hungarian national team in the stadium for the game against Germany in the evening.” For UEFA, the rainbow is “not a political symbol, but a sign of our commitment to a more diverse and inclusive society “.

On Tuesday morning, UEFA announced that the Munich stadium would not be allowed to shine in rainbow colors during the game against Hungary. Orban’s government recently passed a law against “advertising” for homosexuality. After the ban on the Allianz Arena, other landmarks in Munich and numerous stadiums across Germany announced that they would instead use rainbow lighting during the game. On Wednesday, the association complied with its numerous critics: “UEFA is proud to be wearing the colors of the rainbow today,” wrote the association, which enhanced its logo with the six colors, on Twitter.
