[Top 50] # 14: Derrick Henry, legend under construction

From May 15 to July 3, TDActu presents its Top 50 NFL players. To arrive at this ranking, each member of the editorial staff voted for the 50 players they would like to have on their team to start the coming season. These rankings were then compiled to form the final Top 50.

The opportunity to debate, but also to present 50 profiles to those new to the NFL.

Derrick Henry – Running Back – Tennessee Titans

ID card : 27 years old – 1.90 cm – 112 kg

Draft : n ° 45 in the 2nd round of the 2016 Draft – Alabama

CV : Offensive Player of the Year (2020), 1st All Pro Team (2020), 2nd All Pro Team (2019), 2x Pro Bowl (2019,2020)

Stats 2020 : 2,027 yards in 378 carries, 114 yards in 19 receptions, 17 touchdowns

Career stats: 5,860 yards in 1,182 carries, 692 yards in 76 receptions, 58 touchdowns

Why is he here?

University phenomenon and Heisman Trophy in 2015, Derrick Henry took a little while to find a place in the league. Exceeding 1,000 yards in his third season, he exploded in the next two. Already beaming and All Pro in 2019, Henry joined the club of runners over 2,000 yards to the race in 2020 after an exceptional season that earned him the title of offensive player of the year.

What makes Henry unique is his style of play, closer to the 90s than to the 2020s. A pure runner, all in power, he does not bring on the passing game but that does not prevent him from dominating. The former Alabama is unique, and it is this singularity that makes him difficult for opposing defenses to grasp.

And while he’s not the fastest, he can run 99 yards his way.

2021 target

The Titans have had two great seasons, but the squad doesn’t seem to have gotten any stronger this season. The announced duel with the Colts for the AFC South will be difficult for the Titans, and they will need a great Derrick Henry once again.

Behind one of the best lines in the league, he will have the opportunity to show himself. If it is difficult to imagine a second season at 2,000 yards, it will once again be the engine of this team and will have the heavy task of carrying the attack to potentially reach the playoffs for a third consecutive year.

Heard in the editorial

« An old school runner who is successful in the modern NFL, what a wonderful symbol.», Victor Roullier

« A tank. A joy to see play. The exception that confirms the rule. Probably the only absolutely irreplaceable runner, in delicious old school style. »Alain Mattei
