Real Madrid confirms: figurehead Sergio Ramos is waved goodbye after sixteen years

Sergio Ramos is leaving Real Madrid after 16 years. The figurehead will explain his departure on Thursday, in the presence of club president Florentino Pérez.

That has The Royal announced through the club channels on Wednesday evening. Ramos will run out of his contract at the end of the month: club and player have been working on extending that contract for a long time, but were unable to reach an agreement. Thursday afternoon there will be an official goodbye, as became clear earlier on Wednesday evening. Perez will also be present to escort Ramos out, Real Madrid emphasizes.

The central defender came over from Sevilla in 2005 and has played almost 700 official games for Real Madrid. In sixteen years he became five times national champion with The Royal, he was allowed to hold up the Champions League four times and became Spain’s record international.

In his last Real Madrid season, however, Ramos was constantly plagued by physical discomfort. Whether and where he will be active next season remains to be seen: Ramos has already been linked to Manchester City and his childhood sweetheart Sevilla in the rumor circuit.
