Pont-de-Roide-Vermondans. Waste paper also deconfined for recycling

For many years, retirees, often former members of L’Avenir de union Ouvrière, (AUO), gym and archery section, regularly devote themselves six mornings a week, (except Sundays), to tying up and store packets of paper. The inhabitants deposit the old papers between the cure and the church, in a shelter reserved for this purpose.

90 tonnes of waste paper

The confinement caused the activity to be suspended. Since June 9 the group has resumed its work. The “confined” have sorted out many of the old documents, and the volunteers are hoping for a “nice” overload of work. Each year, between 80 and 90 tonnes are prepared by the faithful and experienced “veterans”. Intended for recycling, the paper is reused approximately 7 times. The volunteers tie up 25 cm high packages then put them in a pile while waiting for the quarterly transfer by dumpster, in Golbey in the Vosges. Made up of approximately 350 packages, each stack weighs approximately 2 tonnes. When the 12 piles are complete, four times a year, they are transported in dumpsters. During this long morning, the clan of seven received the help of a dozen friends, “with a snack break… and a quick drink, to maintain the friendship”.

Good sorting and good finances

This experienced team does not fail to insist that “the recovery of old paper should not be like a deposit of any kind, it must be sorted. The recyclable paper includes: newspapers, pictures, advertisements, books, directory etc., but clean and not crumpled papers, no envelope, no kraft paper and plasticized paper ”. And this recycling operation helps round the finances of young AUO athletes, while helping to save the forest! Between 10 and 70 € per tonne, purchase price based on stock market prices, accompanied by an agreement with the town hall which guarantees a floor price. Support appreciated by AUO, especially in this period of “lean cow”, due to Covid-19.
