Nothing has been signed yet. But if Suat Serdar (24) returns from vacation at the weekend, things could be quick. Hertha BSC has confirmed the midfielder and is about to come to an agreement with his current employer Schalke 04.

West Ham United offered almost 45 million euros transfer fee for Suat Serdar in January 2020, according to kicker information, both Schalke and the player rejected the offer from the island at the time. The fact that the midfielder is now, almost 18 months later, about to move to Berlin for a base transfer of around eight million euros says a lot: about the transfer market in Corona times – but also about Serdar, which was a complicated year and a half behind.

He couldn’t stop Schalke’s decline, and his own form also suffered. After relegation with the miners, the German national team player, whose last of four international appearances so far dates from September 2020 (1: 1 against Spain), wants to make a fresh start in the capital. Serdar has canceled other interested parties from Germany and abroad, he wants to go to Berlin.

Hertha’s new managing director Fredi Bobic was already interested in Serdar, who moved from Mainz to Schalke in 2018 for an eleven million euros transfer fee. There he had so trumped, especially in the first half of the 2019/20 season, that at the beginning of 2020, In addition to West Ham United, Atletico Madrid also appeared on the scene. But the outbreak of the pandemic, several injuries to Serdar (ankle, broken toe, knee) and Schalke’s crash completely changed the omens.

The fact that Serdar changes doesn’t change anything for Maier

In the future, the strong Serdar at Hertha wants to build on his best phases in Mainz and Schalke. Hertha hopes that the designated newcomer will above all increase the risk of goalscoring from midfield. Serdar’s imminent commitment has apparently no influence on the future of Arne Maier (22), who is also located in the central midfield. The captain of the U-21 European championship team is returning to Hertha BSC after a loan season with Arminia Bielefeld, where his supporter Pal Dardai has been in the dugout since January. The 2021/22 season will then also be a new start for Maier – at his old place of work.
