Munich police are expecting “problematic” fans from Hungary

The Munich police are preparing for a possible protest against the LGBTQI + community as part of the third European Championship group game between Germany and Hungary on Wednesday. The officials pay special attention to around 200 supporters of the Hungarian national football team from “more problematic fan associations,” said police spokesman Andreas Franken.

In total, his authority expects around 2,000 Hungarian fans. Several police officers from Hungary who knew the scene supported the roughly 1,500 Bavarian officers on the mission. Franken made it clear that there would be consistent action against “racist and homophobic content” in or outside the stadium.

The Uefa confirmed on Tuesday that the Munich EM stadium will not shine in the rainbow colors as a symbol of tolerance and equality. In contrast, the Bavarian Lesbian and Gay Association announced a demonstration for Wednesday.

The background to the planned protest is a law that restricts the information rights of young people with regard to homosexuality and transsexuality in Hungary and was approved by the Hungarian parliament last week.
