Course, altitude and favorites of the Italian Championship
Hello and welcome to LIVE LIVE of the Italian Cycling Championships 2021. The tricolor will be awarded on the same path that characterized the Imola 2020 World Championships, for a total of 225 kilometers with 3,677 meters in altitude starting from Bellaria Igea Marina and arrival in Imola.
First part of the race not too demanding up to Cima Monticino (280 m slm) located about 70 km from the start. After the brow and the following descent the group will find themselves climbing Cima Gallisterna (268 m slm), a 2.7 kilometer climb with an average gradient of 6.4% but with peaks reaching 14%.
We will therefore pass by Via Sabbioni and you will enterAutodromo Enzo and Dino Ferrari. We will pass under the finish line for the first time after 100 kilometers from the start. From here will start the circuit to be repeated for four times which includes the ascent of Cima Mazzolano (137 m asl) with its 2.8 kilometers with an average gradient of 5.9% and peaks of 13% in its initial part, Riolo Terme, Cima Gallisterna before returning to Imola.
It will be a very demanding test with climbs that are not very long but very hard, especially if faced at high speed. For this reason the favorites could be those riders with an important fast start but with excellent ability to resist or make a difference on the snags.
The hottest names are those of Diego Ulissi (UAE Emirates), returned to victory in the Tour of Slovenia after heart problems, Gianni Moscon (Ineos Grenadiers), Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain-Victorious) in great shape this time of the season, Alberto Bettiol (EF Nippo). After the good things he showed to the Tour of Italy impossible not to include in the ranks of the protagonists Damiano Caruso who could also act as a wingman for Colbrelli, as always the road will dictate the tactics to be followed, and Lorenzo Fortunato (Eolo Kometa), winner of the Ionica Adriatica Race.
Difficult to assume a leading role for Fabio Aru (Qhubeka Assos), who is preparing for the Tour de France. He will try to impress everyone Giovanni Visconti (Wines Zabù-KTM). At Trek-Segafredo the captain should be Giulio Ciccone but obviously pay attention to Vincenzo Nibali. The defending champion is also in the race Giacomo Nizzolo (Qhubeka Assos) who, given the difficulty of the course, in all probability will not be able to defend the flag.
