A Hall of Fame member and most-winning Divison 1 coach in men’s basketball history, Krzyzewski has announced that next season will be his last with the Blue Devils, who have become one of the NCAA’s most prestigious programs under his watch.

Duke has also appointed deputy and former Blue Devil Jon Scheyer as Krzyzewski’s successor, for the 2022-2023 season.

“My family and I consider today to be a holiday,” Krzyzewski said in a statement Wednesday evening.

Stadium first reported the news of 74-year-old Krzyzewski’s final season.

He’s led Duke to five national championships, most recently in 2015. He has 1,170 career wins since joining Army, including 1,097 wins in 41 years with the Blue Devils and their most passionate fans at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Scheyer a 33 ans.

“He’s clearly ready for this opportunity and has shown it many times as a player and assistant over the past eight seasons,” said Krzyzewski. Jon is a rising star in our profession and basketball at Duke couldn’t be in better hands. ”

Krzyzewski will meet the media on Thursday, while Scheyer will do so on Friday.

Krzyzewski led the Blue Devils to 12 Final Four appearances and a record 15 ACC Section tournament championships.

Engaged in March 1980, “Coach K” won the national championships in 1991, 1992, 2001, 2010 and 2015.

In November 2011, he broke his mentor’s victory record with Army, Bob Knight.

Krzyzewski has adapted his approach over time. He won the 2010 title with several senior players, and the 2015 title with more one-and-done players, playing only one season before turning to the NBA.

It has become synonymous with the elite University of Durham, North Carolina, but also basketball as a whole.

Along the way, he took charge of the United States Men’s National Team – he notably coached the late Kobe Bryant, as well as LeBron James. Its brigades won Olympic gold in Beijing in 2008, London in 2012 and Rio in 2016.

“What he means to the countless players he has coached, academics and professionals, is simply immeasurable,” ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips said in a statement.

Duke missed the most recent NCAA tournament (for the first time since 1995), but hopes are high for next season.

Scheyer played for Krzyzewski from 2006 to 2010. He joined the coaching staff prior to the 2013-14 season and rose to his current position after the 2017-18 season.

Scheyer was an interim coach in January when Krzyzewski was on the sidelines on pandemic protocols, against Boston College.

He was never a head coach at the university level.

“Duke has been a central part of my life for over a decade, and I couldn’t ask for a better place to pursue my career,” Scheyer said, in a statement. Coach K has set a standard that every coach at all levels should strive to achieve. ”
