Messi’s genius did not reach: the Argentine National Team drew 1-1 against Chile in its debut in the Copa América

The Argentine National Team debuted in the Copa América Brasil 2021 with a 1-1 draw against Chile in Rio de Janeiro. Although he began winning thanks to a goal from Lionel Messi from a free kick, he started asleep in the complement and the trans-Andean players tied it with a goal from Eduardo Vargas, who anticipated everyone in the rebound of a penalty saved by Emiliano Martínez.

Although the national cast deserved the victory, it was not fine in the offensive sector and above it left doubts in the defense. In the play of the Chilean goal, for example, Nicolás Tagliafico committed an unnecessary penalty to Arturo Vidal.

This match was played at the Nilton Santos stadium for the first date of Group A, where four of the five members will qualify for the quarterfinals. Next Friday the Albicelet will face Uruguay.

Going to the game process, Argentina was the one who created the first risky situations after an even start: at 10, for example, Lautaro Martínez captured a middle center from the left sector inside the area and sent the ball to the goal kick.

After the first quarter of the game, who had the goal on his feet was Nicolás Gonzàlez, and in duplicate, but on both occasions the goalkeeper Claudio Bravo drowned the celebration: the clearest was the second, since he was hand in hand after a great Giovani Lo Celso’s filtered pass.

But to break zero, Lionel Messi had to appear: At 33 minutes, and at a time when the national team had entered a plateau, he took charge of a free kick at the door of the area and hung it at the angle. Great goal for 1-0.

The goal enlarged Albiceleste, who on the next play was very close to extending the lead: Martínez, who is not coming straight, finished off deflected after a pass from Gonzalo Montiel from the right.

Already at the end of the first half the intensity of the National Team was decreasing, which claimed a penalty from the referee Wilmar Roldán for a hand in the area. The VAR reviewed the play and considered that it was not the referee that should not sanction the maximum penalty.

With no time for more, the cast led by Lionel Scaloni went to halftime with a well-deserved 1-0 in their favor, although with some doubts in defense, especially in the setback and stopped ball.

CHILE REACHED THE TIE AT THE START OF THE SUPPLEMENT

In addition, the advantage lasted little and nothing for the Argentine National Team, since at 12 minutes Chile tied: Nicolás Tagliafico infringed Arturo Vidal inside the area and Roldán, at the request of the VAR, charged a penalty.

Although goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez covered Vidal’s shot from twelve steps, Eduardo Vargas was faster than everyone on the rebound and headed 1-1 for the trans-Andean team.

After the tie, the National Team entered a well for a few minutes, while Chile took possession of the ball and prowled the goal of “Draw” Martínez, although without generating too much danger.

Against this background, Lionel Scaloni decided to put his hand in the team: two offensive footballers entered as Ángel Di María and Exequiel Palacios instead of Giovani Lo Celso and Leandro Paredes, respectively,

After 20, the Albiceleste began to regain some ground and, at 25, had a clear on Messi’s feet to return to the advantage but goalkeeper Bravo avoided a new fall of his goal.

Already in the final stretch of the meeting the national cast was once again the clear protagonist of the meeting and was very close to staying with the victory, but failed again at the last touch. González, with a good game, headed only a Messi center inside the area and sent the ball over the crossbar.

In the final minutes it was all from Argentina, which was not fine on offense and had to end up conforming with a point in its debut in the Copa América 2021. Now it will play again next Friday, against Uruguay, from 9 pm.
