Three men were terrified as they brought a luxury yacht from Kent to Greece. While sailing near Gibraltar, a group of thirty orcas attacked their vessel. The predators surrounded the crew, slamming into the ship for two hours and even biting off the rudder.
“We feared for our lives,” said Martin Evans (45) and Nathan Jones (27) who were part of the crew. After the two-hour attack, they finally managed to dock at a Spanish peninsula. There they are now stranded: the damage to the yacht is too great to reach their destination.
It’s not clear why the killer whales attacked, but Evans and Jones also saw small specimens among the adult marine mammals. So it’s possible that the large killer whales were trying to protect the group’s young animals.
