Richard Gasquet (53)

With Richard Gasquet, the last French player has already died at Roland Garros. Never before has no southern neighbor failed to make it to the 3rd round.

Richard Gasquet had another good excuse. In his 2nd match, he faced top favorite and 13-time overall winner Rafael Nadal.

On his 35th birthday, he defeated the last Frenchman in the tournament. Only in set 2 (7-5) did he have to work up a sweat against his contemporary Gasquet.

For example, Nadal provided a first in modern tennis history (since 1968): not a single Frenchman made it to the 3rd round in Paris.

Rafael Nadal

Rafael Nadal is on track for his 14th title in Paris.
