Duke’s coach, Mike Krzyzewski, the winningest coach in Division 1 college basketball history and who has led the Blue Devils to five national championships in 40 seasons, plans to retire after the 2021-2022 season, sources confirmed to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
The Hall of Fame coach is seeking to finalize the search process with university officials to name Jon Scheyer, who is an associate head coach, as his successor, according to ESPN sources.
Duke has spoken with outside candidates to replace Krzyzewski, including the coach. Tommy Amaker, according to sources. However, Scheyer has been the top recruiter for stars of the stature of Jayson Tatum and Zion Williamson and the main replacement for Coach K at Duke, sources said.
Stadium was the first to report that Krzyzewski planned to retire next season.
Krzyzewski, who has won 1,097 games at Duke, has led the Blue Devils to the Final Four 12 times. He has won 12 ACC regular season championships and 15 conference titles. In addition, it has produced 28 players who have come out in the NBA lottery, 41 have been chosen in the first round.
His five national titles make him only the second coach behind UCLA’s John Wooden, who has won 10.
