The only German who survived the first round lost against the Belarusian Victoria Azarenka 3: 6 and 5: 7. Both players have been number one in the world rankings in the past.
Kerber has now slipped to 26th, Azarenka is sixteenth. In the second set Kerber managed to take her opponent’s serve twice, but she lost her serve three times and lost after an hour and 21 minutes.
In the quarter-finals, Azarenka will face the winner of the game between Karolina Pliskova and Jessica Pegula on Friday. The Berlin lawn tournament, which takes place on the grounds of the LTTC Rot Weiss Berlin in the Steffi-Graf-Stadion, runs until June 20th and is endowed with my prize money of 456,000 euros.
