Historic silver for Lucía Rodríguez and Ania Setién

A historic day for badminton in Galicia and for Suflenorsa As Neves in particular because the duo formed by Ania Setién and Lucía Rodríguez finished in second position in the pair-wise team of the absolute Spanish Championship and, with it, obtained a medal that it was not remembered. According to the data managed by the Condado club, for more than thirty years, there was not a Galician player in the match for the Spanish title.
The result confirms the progression of both players: Setién, still in the sub-19 category, and Rodríguez, in the sub-17. However, the great level of both already allows him to fight with the best Spanish of the moment. And, in fact, Clara Azurmendi and Beatriz Corrales, the best Spanish players after Olympic champion Carolina Marín, were measured in the final. The duel was contested, but finally the experience prevailed by 21-15 and 21-17, two adjusted sets and with which the players of the Nevense club already showed their great capacity.
Silver in the duo was joined by bronze in the individual draw of Ania Setién, who lost in the semifinals to Clara Azurmendi. In this case, by a clear 21-7 and 21-9. For her part, Lucía Rodríguez fell in the quarterfinals against Beatriz Corrales, in this case, by a tight 21-17 and 21-15.
In the coming days, both players will join the discipline of the absolute Spanish team to prepare for the International tournament in Spain. One more step in the promising career of both players.
Regarding the title, Pablo Abián from Zaragoza and Clara Azurmendi from Gipuzkoa were proclaimed badminton champions of Spain by winning yesterday the men’s and women’s individual finals that were held, like the entire tournament, at the Palacio de los Deportes in Cartagena. In the doubles draw, Pablo Abián and his brother Javier won the men’s title, defeating the pair made up of Joan Monroy and Carlos Piris by 21-13 and 21-17 in 40 minutes in the final. The one from Calatayud obtained the double.
