France wins last practice gallop, but holds its breath for injured Benzema: “Didn’t want to take any risk after hard blow” | European Football Championship (11 June to 11 July)

FootballFrance has waved goodbye to the home crowd with a clear victory against Bulgaria, but will nevertheless look back with moderate satisfaction on the last practice canter. Striker Karim Benzema dropped out before the break with a knee injury. National coach Deschamps could not say much about the seriousness. “We have to wait.”

Strong damper for France after almost 40 minutes of football. Karim Benzema had come into contact with a Bulgarian defender a few minutes earlier and had a strong bandage wrapped around the right thigh. The Real Madrid striker tried for a while, but then signaled that he had to leave. How serious the injury of Benzema is remains to be seen, but Didier Deschamps will wait for the verdict with a clenched buttocks.

The national coach gave some more explanation about Benzema’s injury during the break RTL Sport. “Karim has taken a big blow to the right knee. He told me that the muscle was starting to stiffen. We don’t want to take any risks.” And after the match, of course, again about the seriousness of the injury, although Deschamps was not much wiser yet. “I have an excellent medical staff. The right things will happen. Uncertainties are hard to bear, but we have to wait and see.”

Additional tests should clarify how serious the injury is.

Until that setback there was no problem for the world champion, because ‘les Bleus’ were clearly in charge of Bulgaria. Mbappe missed the opening goal, Griezmann did score – albeit with a portion of luck. The Barça striker’s bicycle kick went through a Bulgarian head into goal. 1-0 was also the halftime score.

After the break, France continued to dominate, without really flashing. In the final phase, Olivier Giroud – note the replacement for Benzema – recorded the 3-0 final score with two goals. The French will travel to the European Championship with a big win, but the feeling will only be good when it turns out that the damage is not too bad for Benzema. Finally, the opening match against Germany is scheduled in exactly one week.
