Four years after winning his last game at the All England Club, Andy Murray raised his arms again at Wimbledon, with a hopeful victory against Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili (6-4, 6-3 and 5-7 and 6-3).

The Brit, who has a prosthetic hip, had not played the singles tournament at Wimbledon since 2017, when he gave up in the quarterfinals. Since then, it has only been able to be in the doubles, until this edition, thanks to an invitation from the organization, the two-time champion (2013 and 2016) returned to the joy of the London public.

The successor to Fred Perry 77 years later, he emerged on Wimbledon center court as in his prime. Despite having only played one tournament since March, Murray showed that he still has the will to compete and the physicality for it. On the surface best suited to his weakened career, Murray stepped over Basilashvili for his biggest win in a long time.

Dunblane’s, despite a pothole in the third set, which he led 5-0 and ended up yielding, emboldened the Cathedral, full of the triumph of his prodigal son. Neither his mother nor his wife wanted to miss the display of a Murray who, whatever he does in the rest of the tournament, has already exceeded the expectations placed on him.

At 34 years old and located in position 118 of the ranking, Murray continues forward at Wimbledon and will face the winner of the match between Oscar Otte and Arthur Rinderknech in the second round.
