FC Bayern play in Gladbach at the start

Mith an unfamiliar away game, champions FC Bayern Munich opened the Bundesliga season 2021/22 at Borussia Mönchengladbach and thus the hunt for the tenth title in a row. At the opening game for the 59th season on August 13th (8:30 p.m.), the two coaches Julian Nagelsmann and Adi Hütter will play their first league game for their new football clubs. According to the current Corona Protection Ordinance, 18,000 spectators should then be in Borussia-Park.

The defending champion has played the opening game on a Friday since 2002. Until 2016, home rights were guaranteed when the season kicked off, and after that the Munich team was always allowed to play in the Allianz Arena. This time, the German Football League (DFL), which published the fixtures on Friday, is sending FC Bayern on a trip for the first time. The first game of the season will take place 33 days after the European Championship final and will be broadcast by Sat.1 and DAZN. The DFL has published the complete schedule as a PDF.

For the Bayern opponents it was mostly no fun opening the season against the record champions. In the past season, the Munich team dealt with the later relegated FC Schalke 04 with 8: 0 on the first matchday. Werder Bremen (0: 6/2016) and Hamburger SV (0: 5/2015) also conceded hearty opening failures. Mönchengladbach, VfL Wolfsburg, Bayer Leverkusen and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim were also losers at the start of the season in recent years. Only Hertha BSC managed to wrest a point from the industry leader at 2-2 in 2019.

Big hit in the second division

Another highlight on matchday one promises to be the match between Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt. BVB had snatched the place in the Champions League away from Hessen in the final phase of last season. The newly promoted VfL Bochum and Spielvereinigung Greuther Fürth have to play in Wolfsburg and Stuttgart, respectively. The first test of strength between runner-up RB Leipzig and FC Bayern will take place on the fourth match day (September 11th and 12th).
